A Reuters report gives some sobering information about the cost of computer security issues. From a survey presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos, one security company estimates that data theft can cost up to $1 trillion dollars annually. From malware – 80% of which is “aimed to make financial gain”, and not simply cause problems on computers – to employee theft of data, to other types of security breaches, computer security has increasing costs. Globally, malware is said to have increased 400% in 2008, and the trend shows no sign of abating. As we’ve reported here often, threats to the Mac are on the rise as well. Security protection is no longer just to keep computers safe, but also to keep company bottom lines in the black.
