Securing Your Home Wireless Network

An article in Macworld, by Glenn Fleishman, looks at how you should secure your home wireless network to make sure that outsiders – malicious or otherwise – can’t get in. This article makes the assumption that you want both Macs and Windows computers to access it, and that you may want to access it yourself remotely, to get files you need. Fleishman discusses which type of network protection to use – WPA or WPA2 Personal; how to keep outsiders from reaching your computers – turning on NAT, or network address translation; and how to get remote access to files – using file sharing, a NAS or an iDisk. All in all, this article gives you the tools to make sure your home wireless network is safe and secure. It’s not foolproof, however, which is why we recommend protecting your computers with Intego NetBarrier, the ideal personal firewall, because savvy hackers can still manage to get by some of these barriers.
