Microsoft Updates Office 2004 and 2008 for Critical Vulnerabilities

Microsoft has issued updates for Office 2004 and 2008 for stability, but also for “vulnerabilities [that] could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Word file,” and “vulnerabilities [that] could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Excel file or a specially crafted Lotus 1-2-3 file.” Microsoft calls these vulnerabilities “Critical.”
Users can use the Microsoft AutoUpdate program to get these updates, or download them from Microsoft’s Mactopia web site. The Office 2008 updater is 333 MB and the Office 2004 updater is a mere 16 MB. (The updates are smaller when downloaded using the AutoUpdate program; the Office 2008 update is only 210 MB.) They update Microsoft Office to versions 12.2.7 and 11.6.1 respectively.
