Keep Your Webmail Secure

Many people depend on web-based e-mail; it’s free, easy to use, and accessible from anywhere in the world, on any computer. As we reported recently, Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s Yahoo! account was compromised using some basic social engineering.

Wired’s how-to wiki gives a number of ways to secure webmail. Looking at Gmail, Yahoo! and Hotmail, the article shows you how to turn on existing security settings, or use additional login security options to make sure you’re not trying to log in on a hacked site. Bear in mind, though, that social engineering can still succeed in getting your password reset. So, as always, be careful, but be creative.

Note that since this page is a wiki, it will be updated over time. So you might want to go back and check in a while and see if any other tips have been added.
