Apple has released updates to three of its four operating systems: iOS, tvOS, and watchOS. Apart from the usual stability improvements and bug fixes, there are some interesting security fixes as well. A bypass bug discovered several weeks ago by Miguel Alvarado from iDeviceHelp, which allowed access to photos and contacts on a locked device, is most notable.
Here’s what you need to know about Apple’s latest software updates.
Apart from the new TV app, redesigned emoji and a few new full screen Messages effects there are a few security details worth mentioning.
Here are a few of the highlights:
Accessibility
CVE-2016-7634 & CVE-2016-7664: With accessibility set up, iOS previously spoke passwords out loud, which of course allowed anyone within earshot to hear them. This behavior was disabled. An issue also existed with the lock screen, which allowed access to photos and contacts on a locked device. This was fixed by restricting lock screen options.
Find My iPhone
CVE-2016-7638: Usually when you try to disable Find My iPhone, you must enter your Apple ID password. This apparently did not always happen or was able to be bypassed by an attacker who got their hands on an unlocked device. Improved storage of account information fixed this issue.
Local Authentication
CVE-2016-7601: The idle timer in iOS makes sure your device’s screen locks after a set amount of time. An issue with this timer sometimes prevented this from happening. The issue was addressed by improving the handling of the timer.
CVE-2016-4689: Email can be secured with S/MIME certificates and can be set to sign, encrypt or both. An email signed with a revoked certificate may have appeared valid while in fact it was not. S/MIME policy failed to check if a certificate was valid. This issue was addressed by notifying a user if an email was signed with a revoked certificate.
SpringBoard
CVE-2016-4781: In some cases, a counter issue existed in the handling of passcode attempts when resetting the passcode. This could have allowed someone to unlock a device. The issue was resolved through improved state management. SpringBoard manages the home screen on your iOS device.

Apple has removed the web page detailing the security fixes of watchOS, presumably due to the issues some users are having with the update. The update itself has also been pulled. Once the update is fixed and released again, details will be posted here.
For Apple TV the update can be downloaded directly from the Apple TV by going to Settings > System > Update Software.
Once it’s available again, for Apple Watch the update can be installed by connecting the watch to its charger then on the iPhone open the Apple Watch app > My Watch tab > General > Software Update.
A lot of people were expecting the next macOS update to be released alongside iOS 10.2, tvOS 10.1 and watchOS 3.1.1. While Apple’s release schedule is, of course, not set in stone, I suspect there may be a small delay with the macOS update because they are implementing the new iCloud “report spam” feature last minute. It’s just my guess at this point, but I’m expecting macOS 10.12.2 to be released tomorrow.
